What would you think of getting cold and wet… plunging into the ocean… in Virginia Beach.. in February? And… by getting cold and wet and having a great time with great people, you can make a difference by helping Special Olympics Virginia (SOVA) Area 6 raise funds that go directly into the programs offered to Special Olympics Athletes right here in the Richmond Metropolitan Area. Area 6 offers programs for over 500 Athletes in Chesterfield, Goochland, Powhatan and New Kent. Your plunge will help make these programs possible.
The Special Olympics Virginia (SOVA) Polar Plunge will take place Saturday, February 8, 2014 in Virginia Beach. As they say about the Polar Plunge Event “Freeze the day and join us and thousands of other brave souls for the coolest thing you’ll do in 2014.”
SOVA Area 6 is an entirely volunteer organization that charges nothing for Athletes to participate in sports and events. Our key Area 6 volunteers, or council members, organize the programs and all the planning, to coach, obtain equipment and arrange for transportation for year round training in more than 15 sports that are offered free of charge to the Special Olympics Athletes who reside in the Richmond Metropolitan Area. Something we always need help with and greatly appreciate is any assistance with fundraising. We are hoping to make the annual Polar Plunge a successful part of our fundraising efforts each year and believe you can help us do that and also have fun while helping us achieve our goals.
The Polar Plunge begins with a Friday night Party and ends after the Actual Plunge into the Atlantic on Saturday afternoon. Many of our Athletes and their families come to Virginia Beach on Saturday to enjoy a costume parade, music and all the fun of the expo before the actual plunge. The entire weekend schedule can be viewed here: http://www.polarplunge.com/View/Page/Schedule. As an alternative to jumping into the cold ocean, you could run the Polar Plunge 5K on the Virginia Beach boardwalk Saturday morning and help raise funds with your participation in FirstGiving.
A council representative and Athlete Global Messenger would be available to come to any groups during a meeting or other gathering to provide a very brief description of the Polar Plunge to the interested groups and hope that many will want to participate, individually or to create a team.
When the Plunge is over we will honor the individuals and teams with awards and prizes for those raising the most for SOVA Area 6. I’m excited about this event, and hope you and your family and friends can help us and have a “cool” event to look forward to.
You are welcome to join our Area 6 team, ‘Area 6 on Ice’ or create your own individual or team registration. We ask that anyone interested in helping raise funds for our local Athletes by plunging that register with their own individual or team name please add ‘Area 6’ before that name to ensure the funds they raise stay in their local area. For example, if Joe Smith created a team for himself it could be named ‘Area 6 Joe Smith.’You can go to the link http://www.polarplunge.com/View/Page/Sign_Up to sign up for the ‘Plunge’ or the 5K and create your own fundraising pages. After you begin the registration process you will receive a prompt asking if you would like to join or create a team. We would love to assist you, your clubs or organizations, in raising funds for Area 6 by adding your FirstGiving links to our Plungers’ Page. If interested, we are asking that you send your FirstGiving links to web@area6SOVA.org for inclusion on our website.
Thank you so much for your consideration in supporting Special Olympics in your local area. Your support and that of your family and friends will be greatly appreciated by Special Olympics Area 6 and all our Athletes. Come join us for the fun!
