Council Bios:
Mike Duncan - Treasurer
I first began volunteering with Special Olympics in 2005 with the Alpine Skiing event. I am now involved in many SOVA activities such as a management team member for the Summer Games, a referee for the Basketball Championships, a Little Feet Meet Volunteer and instructor for Alpine Skiing. I grew up in Fauquier County and went to college at Virginia Tech. I moved to Richmond in 2001 and worked for KPMG. I am currently employed with Insmed Incorporated. I truly enjoy volunteering in the community and love working with the athletes.
Crystal Fowler - Athlete Representative
Crystal has been involved in Special Olympics sports since 1992. She is active in tennis, softball, volleyball, basketball, and bowling. She has participated in swimming, roller skating, and track & field.
She has represented Virginia at three World Games competitions in Tennis, winning various medals including a gold in 1999.
Crystal loves being involved in Special Olympics sports and sometimes volunteers to help the skills athletes.
Pat Fowler - Powhatan
I have been a volunteer for Special Olympics sports since my daughter, Crystal, started playing tennis in 1992. I became Powhatan County Coordinator in 1994, and have been coach or assistant coach in all the sports available to Powhatan athletes.
Currently, Powhatan offers volleyball, softball, basketball, track & field, and tennis.
Betsy Hall - Henrico
My first involvement with Special Olympics was in the early 80s when my daughter, Lisa, started doing swimming and track/field at her school. I am one of the coordinators for the Henrico County Adult Program. One of my jobs is maintaining the medicals for the athletes in Henrico County. I also schedule the schools and playing fields for our practices which consist of: soccer, volleyball, bowling, swimming, basketball, bocce, softball, tennis, track & field, alpine skiing, golf and rhythmic gymnastics. I played softball for a couple of years and am now the coach of the team. Special Olympics is a large part of my life, giving me the chance to be involved with the parents, guardians, counselors and most importantly the athletes.
Jayne Hancock - Goochland
I first became involved in Special Olympics eight years ago as a coach and chaperone in Goochland County. I took the coordinator job seven years ago. Goochland started with 3 athletes nine years ago. I have been a Special Education teacher in Goochland for the past 32 years. I have assisted coaching soccer, basketball, and track & field sports. We have added a 7-on-7 soccer team, a 5-on-5 basketball team, and will soon add swimming. I have been able to get the high school to recognize the students for the sports they participate in by giving them varsity letters and pins. We have gone from taking the studetns to games by car to getting county buses to transport our athletes to competitions just like any other high school athletes. We are very fortunate to have the support of our high school Athletic Director and county-wide administrator support. Our next step will be to try to expand to offer other sport participation opportunities. The athletes wanted to be the Bulldogs just like their high school. The students helped design the uniforms down to the color choices. Many of our athletes continued participating after graduation.
Special Olympics has become part of my life. The athletes look forward to practices and games. They are very appreciative of our efforts to assist them in participating in sports. I believe that the relationship established with the athletes during Special Olympics filters over to assist in establishing a positive student/teacher relationship. The students start in Special Olympics in elementary school and feel very comfortable with their move to the high school because of the relationship I already have with them though Special Olympics.
Pam Horner - Henrico
I have been involved in Special Olympics as a parent since 1977 in Hampton, VA. When I moved back to Richmond in 1981, I got both of my sons involved in the Henrico School Based Program and I came on the council in 1987 as Trip Coordinator as it was called then. Then somewhere along the way I became co-coordinator with Betsy Hall for Henrico County Adults and have been involved in that ever since.

She currently is the Local Coordinator for Special Olympics in Chesterfield County Public Schools, and focuses on increasing athlete and teacher participation. Marjorie teaches youth with exceptional needs at Salem Church Middle School, and is an outspoken advocate of the positive impact that Special Olympics has on all students.

She served as Head Athletics Coach for Team Virginia at the inaugural Special Olympics National Games held in Ames, Iowa in 2006. She has been honored as SOVA Coach of the Year in 1994 and as recipient of the Virginia H. Foster Winning Spirit Award in 2006.
Serving Special Olympics and their families is a calling for her, and it has become her ministry.
Donna & Jerry Overby - Charles City
We first became involved in Special Olympics about 4 years ago. Special Olympics opened new doors for our son, Jonathan, who has Downs Syndrome. Our experience began in Hopewell, but we decided to bring Special Olympics to Charles City since we didn’t have a program in our area. In Fall 2007 we began with a bowling program. In Spring 2008 we added Track & Field (Athletics). Now in our 2nd year, we offer sports programs in Basketball, Bowling (Fall, Winter & Spring), Aquatics and Track & Field. We also plan to start Softball, pending the level of interest.
Meg Powell - Area Coordinator
Meg Powell has always had a passion for sports. She has participated in an organized sport of some kind since she was 10 years old on many different levels, from a player to an official to a coach to an organizer. She was introduced to Special Olympics - Virginia and Area 6 while playing softball with several other Special Olympic volunteers. Since then, Meg has coached youth and adult 3-on-3 basketball teams for Henrico. She plays on the Henrico Hurricanes softball team. Meg also works with the Hanover/Henrico golf program as a coach/partner. Meg lives in Richmond and has all her life. She is employed with Verizon as a second level manager in the Global Network Planning organization. In her spare time, she likes boating, reading and music.
George R. Scott - Fundraising Director
George joined SOVA Area 6 in June 2008 as the Fundraising Director. A native of Richmond, his first experience with Special Olympics was as an Area 6 ski coach for a day trip to Wintergreen Mountain Resort. He was the Fundraising Co-Chair at Northwestern to Benefit Special Olympics, the nation’s largest and oldest student run S.O. chapter. He has coached S.O. track & field, conditioning, soccer, and alpine skiing. He also mentored athletes in reading and math. He is the current Henrico Alpine Skiing coach.
George graduated in 2004 from Trinity Episcopal School in Richmond. In 2008, he graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois with a B.S. in Materials Science & Engineering. He is now earning an M.S. in Nuclear Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Beth Stodulski - Hanover
My long-time dream has been to work with special needs people in a good life-changing way. Part of my dream was fulfilled when I started working with SOVA in March 2007. Since that time I have become as involved as possible in every sport offered by Hanover. I became the Hanover coordinator in February 2008 when long-time (12 years) coordinators Mike and Kathy Healey stepped down. It has been a challenging yet very rewarding experience. The athletes touch my life in ways that I couldn’t have imagined before having the pleasure of working with them. In hoping to make a positive life-changing difference in their lives I feel that I am the one benefitting instead. Every volunteer, young and old, that I have talked to has said that their lives will never be the same once meeting the amazing athletes.
Deana Sun - New Kent
Deana Sun has been involved with Special Olympics for over 3 years as a parent volunteer and county coordinator. She has two autistic sons, both of which have been involved in many sports (track & field, bowling, gymnastics, wrestling, martial arts, baseball, cycling, and alpine skiing) at various levels (community, school and Special Olympic based programs) and as a family.
