It has been a delightfully busy spring at Area 6! I finally posted images from the Area 6 Softball Tournament (April 26th, Mechanicsville Little League) and the Area 6 Softball Invitational (May 30th, MLL).

Your support made our first participation in Operation Cow Drop a big success! All contributions will help athletes attend more competitions and allow us to maintain our practice sites. We also met many new faces and reconnected with old friends.
Sadly, none of our donors won the grand prize. We’ll make sure you win next year!

“Volunteer to Cheer” at this year’s Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games, set for June 12-13 in Richmond, and get way more than you give. Spend two hours – or all day – showing your enthusiasm for more than 1,300 athletes from across Virginia who will go for the gold in six sports: power lifting, swimming, track and field, tennis, softball and bowling. Sign up today at their Web site.
Check-in will be at the “Volunteer to Cheer” tables located at each competition venue. Here, you will be able to make posters and signs and hopefully meet some athletes face to face. Feel free to dress up in your most fanatic costume or paint your face to show your spirit. Everyone who comes out to cheer also will get free “cheer sticks” to help them get into the spirit.
The Summer Games, which are presented by Comcast, Hardee’s, Sheetz and RightMinds, is the largest of six state-level competitions offered by Special Olympics Virginia.

Chick-Fil-A’s 2nd Annual Operation Cow Drop is TOMORROW!

Join Area 6 as your cows are dropped from an airplane! If your cow lands closest to the center of the cow’s eye, you will win the grand prize!
We will be hosting a booth and you can enjoy dozens of activities including games, music, and food. The Cow Drop will be around 3 p.m.

Area 6 would like to congratulate Mr. Richard Koch on receiving the UPS’s 2009 Jim Casey Community Service Award. Mr. Koch, director of accounting operations at UPS Freight, was chosen among 425,000 employees. The award is the highest community service honor given by UPS and a global recognition of Mr. Koch’s dedication to Special Olympics.
Mr. Koch joined the Area 6 family in 1996 when he moved to Chesterfield County with his wife, Karin, daughter, Michelle, and their special-needs son, Jonathan. Mr. Koch is now the Tournament Director for Area 6 competitions. Mrs. Koch is Chesterfield County’s local coordinator. Michelle is a partner in several Unified sports. Jonathan, now 29, is a roll-model for newer athletes in our programs.
The UPS Foundation also announced it was donating $10,000 to SOVA Area 6. Thank you, UPS, for you generous support!
