Cheer for the Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games at UOR

Summer Games – June 8-10, 2012 – University of Richmond

Summer Games, SOVA’s largest competition, is nothing short of legendary thanks to overwhelming support from thousands of local volunteers who brave the summer heat to assist Special Olympics Virginia athletes each June. Athletes come from all corners of the state to compete in swimming, powerlifting, softball, track & field, bowling and tennis.

This event also features SOVA’s annual Healthy Athletes expo, as well as fan filled stands, thanks to the Volunteer to Cheer program! Cheering opportunities are available Friday between 3-6 and 8-9:30 p.m.; Saturday cheering opportunities run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. During the 2011 Summer Games, a record 2,185 fans cheered on more than 1,200 athletes. Watch a video from the 2009 event and join us in the stands in 2012. For the full schedule and to sign up, visit www.volunteer2cheer.com. SOVA’s goal is to have 2,000 ‘fan-atics’ cheering our Athletes at this years summer games. You and your group can help us reach that goal. Sign up today!

Help us celebrate 30 years at University of Richmond! Summer Games, one of Special Olympic Virginia’s seven state-level competitions, has been at UR since 1983; prior to that, the event was held in Lynchburg.

We hope to see you there!

SOVA Mile Race is a Resounding Success

Nice job today at the SOVA Mile Race!  Everyone should be very proud of their SOVA Mile race. Many many thanks go to all of the SOVA volunteers from Trinity Episcopal School for their efforts in training and running the mile with our Athletes – you all are wonderful!  We appreciate your dedication to our athletes – on a wet Saturday morning, too.

For the record, our training team claimed two first places:  top adult female finisher CHELSEA GAUGHRAN and top adult male finisher MATTHEW “CHIPPER” JONES.  Way to go!

The SOVA Mile Race was run in conjunction with the Capital 10 Miler. We hope everyone had a good time and enjoyed the race – and hope to see you all next year for another SOVA Mile Training season. For more information on the 2011 season’s training, select here.
